Hanging Loose

The last person I would've expected to top 'imself was Harold Shipman. Given the fact that he always denied the murders he committed and that he had an appeal coming up shortly, suicide should've been the last thing on his mind.

During his trial and during the exhumations I couldn't quite believe the accusations being levelled. His practice was a mere 5 or 6 miles from where I live and I think the whole thing was a little too close to home. Mass murder on this scale (and at the time it was *only* 15) couldn't possibly happen round here.

After his conviction I watched a documentary on local BBC TV detailing the full horror. Relatives, friends and intended victims were all beginning to realise that Shipman was an Angel of Death. In fact some of his victims had actually pleaded with their nearest and dearest not to let him near them. Entire streets had been decimated by his actions. It was absolutely horrific.

Prior to charges actually being brought, Dearest worked with a colleague who's mother ran a charity shop with Shipman's last victim. Dearest's friend used to regale her with these fantastic tales of suspicion, forged wills and requests for exhumation that we all took with a pinch of salt, believing them to be the ramblings of a lonely old woman.

In the end that was the key to his 'success'. Old people - in the main - were his prey. Old people that were of no further use to society. Old people who are deemed to have 'had their time'. Old people with no one to fight their corner. Old people who were - on the whole - women.

More shock horror down in the soap opera known as Man City. First off David Seaman announces his retirement and now it looks like we're going to sign Calamity James to replace him. So we have a defence that can't deal with crosses and now another keeper who flaps everytime the ball comes near him at height.

God help us.
