L'Auberge

I spent most of Saturday clearing out the shed and making a couple trips down to the municipal tip to dispose of assorted crap including a very rusty exercise bike, decrepit camping tables and various half empty tins of paint. All this was done to provide enough room to put the bikes in for the winter. There were some bloody huge spiders in there as well. After I'd finally squashed everything back in, Dearest suggested - in that way she has - that the lawn could do with a "quick mow". Believe me, there's no such thing.

Yesterday afternoon was great success. The landlord transformed his tap room into a bistro with tablecloths on the tables usually reserved for cards and dominos. 16 of us sat down to an excellent beef curry with chips and heaps of salad. The ale and wine flowed and Dearest was toasted and hugged until, bleary eyed we strolled home and minutes later were both snoring the evening away. It'll be quite a while before we do that again.

The discussions around our various tables ranged from football (as ever) through a vote on which recorded version of "Under Milkwood" we preferred, to the novels of Thomas Hardy. We sampled a can of beer-flavoured cola (honest. Incidentally it tasted just how it sounds - crap.) This had been brought from the Stuttgart beer festival by one of our party who attended the Champion's League game between Stuttgart and Manchester United.

The talk round the kids and their mates' tables was of forthcoming weddings and the merits of full beards on 20-somethings.

Finally we all had a good laugh at IDS and his assertion that the Tories are on the move and that they will win the next election.
